A component machined from stock and one machined after casting can look identical at delivery. Their manufacturing economics are different. Investment casting vs CNC machining is therefore best understood as a choice of starting shape and production route, rather than a choice between precision and imprecision.

Look at the metal that never reaches the customer

A heavily pocketed part may require substantial stock removal when machined from a solid blank. Casting closer to the finished shape can change that burden. However, the casting route adds pattern, mold, melting and finishing operations that must earn their place in the cost comparison.

For a simple spacer or compact block, the advantages of a near-net shape may be limited. For a branching body or a component with difficult external detail, the reduction in cutting and setups may be more valuable. Compare the actual geometry instead of using material savings as a universal argument.

Tool access can be more decisive than nominal tolerance

Machining depends on access to a surface and a practical way to hold the workpiece. Deep or intersecting features can require special tools, additional setups or design changes. Casting can create some geometry before cutting begins, but internal cleaning and inspection still need consideration.

A hybrid route is common in the decision space: cast the complex body and machine only the interfaces. This should be quoted against the finished drawing, with clear responsibility for datum establishment and machining allowances.

Design maturity changes the value of tooling

Direct machining can be attractive when a design is still moving or only a small number of parts is required. Investment casting introduces preparation that is easier to justify when geometry and repeat demand are sufficiently established. Printed expendable patterns can change the early-stage calculation, but they do not eliminate all foundry development work.

Separate prototype requirements from production requirements. A prototype that proves assembly may not establish the material condition or internal quality of the eventual production casting.

Price the route that will actually be delivered

Ask for an assembled cost covering starting material, processing, heat treatment, machining and inspection. Record whether tooling is charged separately and how future revisions will be handled.
